After struggling early on, the Black and Whites netted twice from dead-ball situations through Simon Kjaer’s own goal (20’) and Mario Gomez (23’) to go 2-0 up, but a 32th-minute Dusko Tosic own goal brought the deficit down to one before the half-time.

Second-half sub Robin van Persie levelled the matters for Fenerbahçe on 65 minutes, however, Beşiktaş’ German striker Mario Gomez took the centre stage again in the 74th-minute as he responded with a superb diving header that fired the Black Eagles back in front 3-2. The visitors desperately searched for the equaliser in the remaining minutes with no avail.
